Guidelines for Golf Teaching Professionals who Teach at Golf Schools
|
The
following company guidelines apply to America's Favorite
Golf Schools as suggestions for teaching professionals
who work in our golf school programs. America's Favorite
Golf Schools have 50 locations throughout the country
and can be accessed by logging onto www.afgs.com.
By reading this, you the customer, can be assured that
our professionals do all that they can to make sure that
your vacation is an enjoyable experience.
- Please greet your guests with a smile and a hearty welcome! It has taken a lot of effort from many people to get these customers to your facility. They have chosen to attend America's Favorite Golf Schools over many competing golf schools. To ensure that the students' needs are met, your enthusiasm must reflect that you are:
- There for the client.
- There to make their day.
- You have chosen the correct attitude.
- You are going to ensure the session is FUN.
- Try to make the students feel as comfortable as possible at all times. Never put them on the spot. They are on vacation and have paid to spend time with us. Our personalities, professional courtesy, manner and appearance can make or break their vacation.
- Prior to teaching, all students should start off simply hitting balls for 5-10 minutes, especially the first morning. This loosens them up, makes them feel more relaxed, and gives you the opportunity to learn their names.
- ** Students should always have a pile of balls in front of them, whether it involves chipping, pitching, sand play, or the full swing. Balls should always be in an even row. Keep an eye on students moving up or back so that no one gets hit by a shank.**
- To create a feeling of structure, each and every morning should commence with a brief description of the daily routine. What do you have planned for the day? They would like to know.
- In a group of 5-10 students, the pro should definitely know their names by at least 9:15am and students should therefore be addressed accordingly.
- Aside from imparting in a simplified manner, the methodology and mechanics of the golf swing, our purpose is to ensure that our students enjoy their golf school vacation.
- Several times after the first day or two, if you
are on the range, have your students pull out any
club or clubs they would like to spend time with.
This way, at the end of the program, they are less
inclined to say, “I really came to improve with my
driver, but we never touched it.” Even beginners should
be allowed to spend time with the driver. That way,
they at least feel satisfied.

- All instruction should be mixed between individual and group and kept as interesting the final day as the first day. Don't forget - “buyer's remorse” can sometimes set in for students. Learning golf is not always easy for many people.
- With regard to all of our golf schools, please be aware of not overloading people with too much information. Regardless of your command of the English language, please keep your explanation short, sweet and to the point. Avoid giving people too many different things to remember. They can only think and concentrate on one or two things at a time. It takes a good teaching professional to in fact limit the amount of information that is imparted to our guests.
- The review of video should never last more than
approximately 20 minutes for the entire class. Any
more than this and our teaching will become too involved,
too technical, and too complex. If you cannot say
what has to be said in a few minutes, please re-evaluate
your teaching style.
- On the golf course with your students please never
get into a situation where you have to let players
through. Always keep pace with the players ahead of
you, even if it involves picking up and making a par
3 out of a par 5. Please explain this to your students
ahead of time so they know what is going on. The golf
course is really not a place to stop and teach. Finish
on time so that friends or spouses are not kept waiting.
Other students will also wonder why their pro did
not work overtime with them.
- ABSOULTELY NO SMOKING BY THE PROFESSIONAL! This is offensive to most people and creates a poor image.
- Your appearance speaks for itself. It is important to look sharp all the time, not just on occasion. Shoes should always be clean and shined. First impressions are important and yes, students will scrutinize your appearance and compare you with their local pro back home.
- NEVER, NEVER, NEVER talk about any personal problems you may have. Guests do not want to know about them, they are on vacation and simply want to enjoy themselves at America's Favorite Golf Schools.
